01Project Introduction
Grass will not grow under old beeches — and it shouldn't have to. This design works with the shade instead of fighting it.
04Design Strategy
A woodland-edge community: spring bulbs and ephemerals, ferns and sedges as the persistent matrix, and flowering shade perennials in the brighter pockets. Leaf litter stays where it falls and becomes the mulch layer.
08Result
Full ground cover in eighteen months, no watering after establishment, and the first spring carpet the garden has had in decades.
